All the various air purifiers available today contain air cleaner filters, which remove contaminants, particles, micro organisms and other toxins from the air. The most popular of all the filters used in air purifiers today are known as HEPA filters, which is short for High Efficiency Particulate Air. These filters have been designed to remove almost 100% of all particles that are no smaller than 0.3 microns in size from the air. They were originally designed for capturing radioactive dust particles by the Atomic Energy Commission but were then found to be just as effective from removing particles from the air that we breathe.

Because this type of filter is able to only allow the very minutest of particles to pass through it, it is able to capture those particles, which can cause allergic or respiratory problems in people. It is able to capture pollen, animal hairs and skin, along with mold spores and dust. But in order to remain effective at capturing such particles the filter in the unit needs to be changed regularly, but is very quick and simple to do.

The next type of filter we are going to being looking at is the charged media filter. This one works by producing an electro static charge, which attracts the particles in the air and attaches them to a fiber filter. The biggest advantage to be gained from having an air purifier in your home which contains this type of filter in it is that it is able to collect particles of a size not less than 0.1 microns. But the biggest problem with these types is that the actually need to have their filters replaced more regularly than those with a HEPA filter in them. Simply because they are able to collect more particles in them.

The final type of filter we are going to be looking at that come in many air and smoke purifier units today is the activated carbon one. Often this type of filter will not be placed in an air purifier unit on its rather but will be used in conjunction with other types of filters. The biggest advantage of having any air purifier units in your home, which have these kinds of filters in them, is they are much more easily able to absorb various different odors and gases that are in the air. Which means that the chances of more contaminants etc., being removed from air in the room have been greatly increased.
